Iranian Flotilla Departs for Gaza

As Israel’s internal investigation into the deadly Turkish flotilla incident gets underway, Iran has announced it is dispatching two ships carrying food and medical equipment to break Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip. Iranian military commanders have backed down from the idea of accompanying the ships with a naval escort. Nevertheless, diplomatic efforts are reportedly underway by Israel and Egypt to prevent the Iranian ships from entering the Mediterranean Sea. It has also been reported that Hizbullah is organizing an aid ship of its own and planning to fill it with female activists. Israel has maintained that it will not change its policy of blocking all ships trying to reach Gaza. However, the Israeli government has announced that it is easing the blockade and will allow more types of goods into the coastal strip via Israeli checkpoints.
