Car Bomb Kills 30 in Damascus

Around 30 people have been killed in a car bomb in southern Damascus. A thick smoke rose from the site and more than 15 ambulances rushed to the scene. It happened in Mahlaq Road in Sayida Zeinab as uncomfirmed reports indicate more than 17 people have been injured.

Sayida Zeinab is Damascus capital's Iraqi zone where most of the 2 million refugees coming from Iraq settle there.

Buildings away have had their windows blown out. Syrian television said the car had been rigged with 440lb of explosives and went off at Sidi Kadad near a security checkpoint on the airport road. It is not yet clear whether the bomb was directed at the security installation next to the airport or at Shia pilgrims flocking to the Sit Zeinab

shrine. While The Syrian government says it can not be sure if it is a terror attack, Syrian Interior Minister Bassam Abdel Majeed on Saturday condemned a car bombing in southern Damascus as a "cowardly terrorist act."  It happened on Mahlaq Road, on a junction between the airport road, and the road to Sayida Zeinab.

Security authorities cordoned off the site soon after the blast, adding windows of houses up to 200 meters away from the scene were shattered by the explosion and that some people were wounded by flying glass. The site was near the Sayeda Zeinab statue, which is popular with Shiite pilgrims coming from Iran, Lebanon and Iraq.
