In Response to Abraham Rabinovich
Article in the Jerusalem Post:
Looking for Humanity
By Nagi N. Najjar
Director, The Lebanese Foundation for Peace

The title of this article in the Jerusalem Post speaks of a very concerned humanitarian worried about Sabra & Shatilla and seeking “Humanity” in all the wrong addresses of the Middle East.

The author emphasized apologetic terms, as if they were platitudes he gathered from Columbia or Cornell University, and he stressed the morality of life. He also preached humanity to those who daily plan our destruction, using murders and assassinations as a planned modus operandi in the Sabra and Shatilla camps in Lebanon. If we examine the roots of the problem, it is the Palestinians who attacked the Lebanese in Lebanon and not the Lebanese who went to Ramallah, Gaza, Nablus or Jenin and massacred the Palestinians living there “peaceably.”

To every abnormal problem in history there comes an abnormal solution as a natural follow-up. Sabra & Shatilla was sadly one of these cases, a natural reaction by the Christian Community backbone, the then Phalangist Party, to the atrocities perpetrated by the PLO murderers against the Christians in Damur, Chekka, Mount Lebanon, Jisr el Basha  and Beirut . The world didn’t care when the Christian Lebanese were butchered by the PLO in the streets of Beirut and their bodies dragged, tied down to the rear of a car in a parade victory style in the streets of the capital, where was the “humanity” and accountability world then?

The Christian Community paramilitary had to react in the years of the war. Elie Hobeika was the Christian Paramilitary Intelligence chief, who was at that time an unknown Syrian double agent, in conjunction with the Syrian Intelligence with whom he was secretly working, he made sure to manipulate the sentiments of the Christian Paramilitary to prod them into committing this massacre following the assassination of President Bashir Gemayel. He did this per secret Syrian instructions, in order to embarrass General Ariel Sharon and create distrust with Israel and destroy the Lebanon – Israel alliance so as to create later a “Syrian-Lebanon” alliance with his friend Assaad Hardane of the SSNP. Hobeika instigated hundreds of car bombs and assassinations to further Syria’s interests against Lebanon. After Syria promised Hobeika the Presidency of Lebanon, Syria murdered him in order for Damascus to silence and burry Elie Hobeika’s secret dirty business of car bombs and assassinations in Lebanon.

Abraham Rabinovich might have forgotten that the PLO murderers created a state-within-a-state in Lebanon, transforming most of the Palestinian Camps in the late 1970s into fortresses of horrors, murders and terrorism, especially in the Sabra & Shatilla camps, who were considered the backbone of Palestinian terrorism in Lebanon, and inviting every international terror organization, the ETA, the Baader Meinhof, the Red Brigades of Italy, Islamic terrorists from Libya, Yemen, Pakistan from every corner of the Arab and Islamic world to establish operational training bases to kidnap, hijack planes and execute bombing against western interests in the Western World and use Lebanon as a launch pad to execute terrorist activities and operations against Israel

Sadly today, by default of this Israeli “leftist” influence and litany of withdrawals, promoted in Israel for three decades since 1982, teaching appeasement, retreat and concessions as the “seeds” of “Peace and Humanity,” and criticizing at every opportunity Ariel Sharon, Sabra and Shatilla, the Lebanese political Right, the Phalangist Party, we all witnessed today where this policy of appeasement has brought the reality of Israel to the brink of extinction. It has compromised a strong Lebanon-Israel 1982 alliance and replaced again a strong Lebanon by a weak Lebanon, based on the Iranian model that allows Hezbollah today to establish itself as a proxy, replacing the PLO, helping and justifying Iran and Syria long term strategy to increase their control and blackmail of the region and the world.

Almost a quarter-century later, it is sad to see the terminology of Sabra & Shatilla emerging as an attack upon Ariel Sharon, the Israel Right, Lebanon’s political right, at a time when Israel’s Left did nothing for the last three decades but set the stage for the bargaining and surrender of Israel’s security and geopolitical landscape in the region .

The results? Look at Lebanon in 2006 and ask the IDF of what they think of the Prime Minister of Israel; look at Lebanon in 2008 where the legal Lebanese Government collapsed in 4 hours and ask Fouad Siniora about the US help, assistance, and reliance. Sadly, with Israel out of Lebanon, with Damascus’s unwillingness to curb and restrain Hezbollah, (only losing time) Syria has not assumed responsibility for the Hariri murder in return for sudden illusionary Israel – Syria “peace accords (Syria is siding with Iran). Shiaa and Sunni fundamentalism compete on whom wants to rule Lebanon as an extension Caliphate for Mecca or Qom.

Lebanon is again being used as a battlefield between Saudi Arabia, Iran and Syria to settle their disagreements and control over Lebanon against the United States and Israel.

With all the tactical advantages or non advantages of Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, it created one mortal strategic reality: It helped Iran and its Revolutionary Guards; Syria & Hezbollah fight Israel on Israel’s territory instead of Jerusalem taking the fight and destroy the enemy on its territory, as Ariel Sharon, Rafael Eitan and Moshe Arens did in 1982.

The 2006 summer events were very clear about that, and we’re still not sure who will lead the political helm in Jerusalem at a time after three decades of “humanitarian concerns and apologies” in Israel by the Left concerning Sabra & Shatilla, criticisms about Ariel Sharon role in Lebanon, from a “Left” in Israel applying unnecessary concessions in the region with the end result of reinforcing Islam, obeying and executing the steps of a State Department appeasement of the Oil Policy influenced by Martyn Indik, Edward Djeredjian , Daniel Kurzer, all pushing the Levant to an apocalypse instead of a “Peace Process”,

With an Olslo Day, a Madrid Day, an Annapolis Day, a Nakba Day, a Jenin Day, a Deir Yassin day, a Sabra & Shatilla day, an anti abortion day, a Nasrallah Jerusalem Day, all promising the end of Israel in Beirut, we see today Israel sinking in the waters of the Levant, thanks to the obedient politicians of Israel’s “Santa Lucia Peace Camp” obeying the blind policy makers of the State Department concerned with building an unequal security footing policy of constant retreats and concessions and favoring Iran taking over the entire Middle East and the whole Levant.

The conclusion? Look at the beautiful image where the Middle East stands today, on the brink of the apocalypse.

The solution is not dividing Jerusalem, neither withdrawing from the Golan nor the West Bank. The solution is halting terror by force. We witnessed what US diplomacy did in Beirut with the Siniora Government struggling Hezbollah by “diplomacy”; we are witnessing today “secret” US-Iran diplomacy over Iraq with what it is doing in the region, Israel needs to go back into Lebanon militarily, install a new status quo in that country that the Lebanese will help maintain, demilitarize and crush Hezbollah, establish a friendly regime in Beirut and topple this regime in Syria, instead of courting a regime in alliance with Iran who is busy double playing Washington and the Left in Jerusalem so as to kill time and escape the Hariri International tribunal .

Israel shouldn’t have any illusions about entering into a Peace accord with Syria, as the only implementation of peace possible after a thirty years mediation with this regime is the whip, combined with fire and steel and an International tribunal for all the crimes committed, since the bombing of the US Marines barracks in Beirut, finalizing with a Rafic Hariri assassination and everything in between, the list is cruel and endless .

Jerusalem needs to draw a new balance of strength in the region that will impact a new Middle East situation from Baghdad to a new Syria and a new Beirut. For Israel, the West and the United States, Damascus will always be part of the strategic problem and never a solution in the Levant, even at the self defeating expense of offering back Lebanon and the Golan as an appeasement gesture.
