Save summit from Syrians
by Ahmed Jarallah
Editor-in-Chief - The Arab Times

WHY have Arab leaders agreed to hold the upcoming Arab summit in Damascus and allow Syria to lead the Arab League for one year? Arab leaders claim they are keen on strengthening the unity of Arab nations. We want to trust these leaders.  We have not questioned their loyalty as they are working for the common interests of Arabs.  They believe that interaction with neighboring countries is essential to maintain national security while atrocious attacks and invasion of other nations are not part of civilization. We fully support these leaders in using such ideologies to rule the Arab world. However, if Arab leaders rule based on the abovementioned ideologies, how can they allow a hypocrite to lead the Arab League for one year? We have seen the true colors of Syria. It is known for its lies, failures and tricks. It has been put to several tests in the past but it has failed them. We cannot help but wonder if it is possible to allow such a regime to lead the Arab League.

One of the conditions specified for taking the chairmanship of the league is for a nation to have good relations with a majority of the Arab countries.  Syria seems to be the opposite of this condition as it is in constant disagreement with other Arab nations. Syria has exhausted all means to express its enmity towards Saudi Arabia.  Besides using 'dirty' political tactics against Egypt, Syria has also instigated conflicts with Yemen, Libya, Morocco, Jordan, Iraq and Sudan.  Syria's hands are stained with Lebanese blood.

It has pulled out Gaza from the Palestinian authority by launching an attack on Gaza.  These acts only show the level of Syria's involvement in wreaking havoc in the region to serve the interests of Iran. If we take a closer look at the joint Arab operations and Syria, we can easily see how Syria severed its ties from other Arab nations to join Iran, which is bent on transforming Damascus from a center of Arab culture to a venue for making objectionable political decisions to undermine the unity of Arab nations. Iran has laid down all these plans in the name of Syria.

Arab leaders seem to be looking for more evidence as if Syria's decision to abandon the peace process and give up its rights to Israel are not enough. What more evidence do these leaders want?  Is it not enough that Syria has violated several agreements in the implementation of various programs, such as the Arab parliament, court and joint stock market? Arab leaders know the real face of Syria. It supports terrorists and serves as their sanctuary.  Terrorists often use Syria as a transit point for transporting their weapons to wage war against Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

How can Arab leaders pass on the chairmanship of the Arab League to terrorists?  Arabs have predicted the upcoming summit will be a failure. They believe the summit will not yield any positive result. It will just be another routine meeting and a waste of time. Arab League Secretary Amir Mousa will probably lead with one leg on one side and the other on the other side to ensure he is with the 'winners'. Arab leaders, who will attend the summit in Damascus, are worthless considering the Syrian leader has no knowledge about dialogues and disregards freedom. We have given the Arab League chair to an incompetent regime, yet, we expect something good out of this decision.
