Iran Supports Unity Among Lebanese Factions: Larijani Tehran Times Political Desk
TEHRAN – Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani on Sunday called for unity among Lebanese political factions to establish stability in the country recently hit by violence.
In a meeting
with Qablan Qablan of the Lebanese Amal Movement, Larijani said Hezbollah and Amal Movement play a key role in maintaining unity among opposition factions.
Last month a Qatari-mediated deal ended an 18-month political
crisis in Lebanon over who should fill the presidency, vacant since Emil Lahoud’s term expired last November.
The majority and the opposition factions elected army chief General Michel Suleiman president and agreed to
form a national unity government.
The agreement grants veto power to the opposition and provides for changes to the electoral law.
“Fortunately there is strong unity among the opposition forces, which indicates a
further victory after the 33-day war (against the Zionist regime),” Larijani observed.
He criticized Western efforts to create tension in Lebanon and expressed Iran ’s support for unity among “all independent Lebanese
forces”.
He also invited Lebanon ’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to visit Iran .
Qablan, also Berri’s special envoy, said the U.S. is troubled with the recent reconciliation between Lebanon ’s opposing blocks
and is seeking new pretexts to provoke violence in the country.
He praised Imam Musa al-Sadr as the mastermind behind the opposition faction’s victories
