The Guardians of the Cedars Built to last in Lebanon By Nagi N. Najjar
Executive Director Lebanese Foundation for Peace
Lebanon needs today a third political mechanism, besides Saudi Arabia versus Syria and Iran political contributions. Given the context of a US backed Saudi performance
fighting against Syria and Iran terrorism proxies on the ground, the Guardians of the Cedars, excluded from both alliances had little room to maneuver politically from its original concepts as it enjoyed during its expediency
in Lebanon past political mosaic. Neither Saudi Arabia, nor Iran and Syria sympathized the standards and ideology the Guardians of the Cedar adapted in Lebanon. Its main political strategy was to
transform Lebanon from a pro Arab entity towards a Westernized type of country within all the framework of its political institutions supported by a Peace treaty withal its neighbors including Israel. His charismatic visionary
leader, Etienne Sakr, distinguished his core value by the discipline practices of his militia during the Lebanese war.
His distinction of pro western Lebanese nationalism inspired enmity from its Arab neighbors, mainly
Syria who saw the Guardians of the Cedars a dangerous school of thought, threatening the characteristics of an anti West Middle East alliance they are trying to create with the help of Iran and other. Lately, the
underground of the Guardians was forbidden to apply politically on a national level due to the heavy influence of Saudi Arabia from one side and a threatening Islamic Iran from the other. In today's unpredictable
Islamic chaotic changes, the only truly reliable source of stability for the West would be to support and enforce such political roots in a country like Lebanon where the framework of fundamentalism stimulate an everyday
destabilization of a westernized cohesive society. Only those courageous leaders practicing history in the making, have the ability to change wisely the destructive path of fundamentalism towards creating a
productive generation.
I am not quoting the daily politicians in Lebanon who measures their interests submitting to Saudi and Iran menus of the day in the region for political positions. In the many capital
of the world, I have seen Etienne Sakr a betrayed man, but always as a leader. He never practiced history, inspired by any political position in his bold character and strong concerted mind. Its was
the ideology of winning first Lebanon's struggle in his mind, standing in his own military bunker as a free man in Southern Lebanon to the last minute. the struggle to built a Middle East to last as a protective
barrier to defend Europe, America and our future generations in Lebanon from Fundamentalist Islam. A struggle that the Christian leadership lost in Lebanon and compromised it for political positions of weakness.
A struggle that writers like Robert Fisk mislead the Western public and misquoted it in History. Fisk attacked and criticized the "ferocity" of the Christian militias in Lebanon's war from one
side ignoring the profanities and atrocities of Arafat and all the other Islamic militias from the other side. The failure of the West consolidating a military victory for the Lebanese provoked a clockwise
terrorist retaliation against it. Since then no place is safe on earth, from the attacks of Hezbollah against the US Marines to finalize it with the events of 9/11. Most of the attacks in London and
Europe wouldn't have happened should the Lebanon crushed fundamentalism in the events of 1982. Since then, terror is growing clockwise building up on an alarming level using any justification without tolerance.
The trajectory against fundamentalist Islam require a revolutionary mind, supported by long term iron fist strategy underlying all factors, that will have the guts to challenge the implications of fundamentalism by
intellectual practice supported by appropriate military means. Despite it cutback from Lebanon in its previous years until today, despite its drop from Lebanon' s political stages at the time being, the Guardians
of the Cedar await their return to Lebanon. Their military supported return to Lebanon should it happen, will create the turnaround of the West against the battle of fundamentalism in the Middle East.
The
return of Lebanon's refugees in Israel in force will rejuvenate and revitalize not only Israel, but the West initiative to secure another victory needed and reverse the course of failure. The Defense of Washington,
London and Jerusalem passes from Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, from Damascus and Teheran lighting up the whole Middle East. The myth of the West in fighting terrorism is relying on forces like
Saudi Arabia maximizing its damage performance in the Middle East. In the reality of the day, the "moderate" Saudis will never win against Iran and Syria's terrorism in the Middle East. Iran
is on a constant aggressive path while the West is on a constant defensive retreat from this reality. Hamas road to power is no mistake in Israel, Hezbollah persistence is no mistake in Lebanon, Zarquawi 's terror
is no mistake in Iraq in his third year.
Only force challenges extremism in the real world and only deterrence will defeat the trajectory of fundamentalist Islam, not the democracy preached by State Department neither
the "moderation" of the Saudis. Saudi Arabia is the problem to the solution in the Middle East, the solution is to apply deterrence first, then support a political compromise on a secondary stage.
We need to help ourselves identify the real threat after 9/11, after the London bombings and the Paris incidents.
From Darfur, to Lebanon, Israel and Serbia, the Free world is bleeding from Saudi Arabia's
mistakes. Dialogue and reason is the wrong answer, in this dictionary of behavior, the West need to pass on the offensive, arming its proxies with no mercy, for its own purpose of existence.
