Lebanon Analysis Letter to the Editor by anonymous Israeli source
[Note: This post is most informative as most of it is true. The Saudi connection has been identified by sources as Prince Bandor, and the topic of quiet Saudi involvement is
extensive and will be the subject of a report in the future. MK]
Dear Readers: Recent occurances in Beirut deserve your attention and merit broad concern. The following truths are most illuminating. The role of Rafik
al-Hariri is quite disturbing as is the role of the Clinton Administration. Several weeks ago a gentleman who is opposing Hariri in the coming parliamentary election in Beirut was invited to the U.S. embassy in
Beirut by the Ambassador, David M. Satterfield. What one would have expected to be a pleasant tour
d'horizon was not. Satterfield told the gentleman that he should withdraw from the parliamentary electoral race because the U.S. embassy was supporting Hariri. On March 11 three Senators of a United States Senate
delegation, Hollings,
Kerrey and Shelby, visited Beirut. They were met at the airport in Beirut by a limo from the U.S embassy and taken directly to the palace of Hariri for a three hour luncheon meeting. Hariri lectured the high-level visitors about the endemic corruption in Lebanon and offered the solution - his rule as a political strongman. His arrogance demonstrated his contempt of democracy as did his warning to the senators that Lebanon would be a dependable friend of the United States as long as the USA supported him as "ruler for life".
The senators also visited the President of the Lebanese Republic, Emile Lahoud. One wonders what President Lahoud thinks of his true status in the eyes of the US government. One also wonders what role Hariri's immense
wealth and Saudi sponsorship play in all this. Lahoud had little to say to the visitors other than to indicate that whatever suited the Syrian government suited the people of Lebanon as well.
Following are examples of Hariri's recent anti-Israeli actions and comments: a. An extremely libelous anti-Israeli film was shown on a Beirut TV station, Future Television, early this month. That TV station is owned by
Hariri. b. Hariri has stated more than once that he would rather "cut off his arm" than sign a treaty with Israel. We people of Israel and you of Lebanon have our differences, but we clearly have serious issues
that we should address together. In addition to the Syrian issue are the money and motives of the Saudis who support Hariri. There are many concerns that we must face together.

The picture below was released this morning and rebroadcast by other groups decrying the use of children
as an ominous threat for the future. However, the future is now as the picture proves that the Palestinian rejectionist groups, previously head quartered in Damascus, are now in Lebanon posing yet an additional threat to Israel
and a free Lebanon. Informed sources point out that Syrian special forces are supplying weapons to the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon that assuredly will be used against Israel and Lebanese freedom fighters.
Since the situation is dynamic and increasingly threatening as anti-Israeli and anti-Lebanese forces build up in strength, PM Baraq's plan for withdrawal is charged with confusion and is non-responsive to threatening events.
Baraq insists he will withdraw shortly AND Israeli spokesmen are now calling for international peacekeeping forces.
This is analogous to Baraq receiving 300 million sheqlim as a starter for withdrawal costs without any assurances, indeed almost a certain rejection, that the US congress will support him financially. How can Baraq
withdraw if he needs international peace keepers that will involve the US against the wishes of Congress and yet protect Israel's northern borders? How can Baraq withdraw when his own staff officers tell him it's unwise to
withdraw under these conditions? How can Baraq withdraw when the forces determined to destroy Israel are building up on the Lebanese heights overlooking Israel? How can Baraq withdraw when these very same forces
are rearmed by both Syria and Iran with new weaponry that can easily reach Haifa? These questions are disturbing
and the Israeli government's actions pose an existential threat to Israel. These actions are not supported by any group in the US as it places the US, US troops, US money, in a precarious position where the US will be asked to support Israel in a defensive war of its own making. And since the US most likely will reject pleas for assistance under these circumstances, Israel will be in dire jeopardy.
A Palestinian boy flashes a victory sign as
he raises a gun in front of a poster of Palestinian leader Nayef Hawatmeh during a demonstration held in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp near the port-city of Sidon, Thursday. Hundreds of the Democratic
Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) members held a rally to mark the anniversary of 'Land Day', the day Israeli occupied Palestine in 1948.
